Donald Starkey is recognised as being a practical designer who approaches his work from the point of view of the user, pragmatically and without preconceived ideas while retaining a sense of humour. This probably accounts for DSD success with winning the execution of the more professionally exacting commercial projects.
Although involved also in Raffles exterior styling, DSD will concentrate on the ten optional designs for 120m2 standard apartments, the about 6,000m2 of mostly air conditioned public areas / facilities of Raffles and the about 12,000m2 of open upper decks and marina.
His work will extend down to designing the unique pieces of furniture and the carpets which are all individually hand made for the space. To help with this Viamar construction management will include its own master cabinet maker from Europe, ensconced in a superbly equipped workshop including the latest CAD / CAM systems immediately alongside Raffles.
The ten Standard Apartments will all be different in their interior arrangement, with 1 or 2 (or more) bedrooms. The furniture design, finishes and colour schemes will all be individually composed and it is highly unlikely with the choices and combinations possible that any two Standard Apartments on Raffles will be the same.
Raffles is not being offered as a cruise ship, but will be of a comparable standard to a mega or “ultra” yacht, and with a similar ambience. In achieving this Donald Starkey Designs expertise and experience will therefore bring to her something that no competing vessel has.
